Florence is my favorite place on the Oregon coast. "Old Town" on the river front is a delightful place to visit. Shopping/dining options are plentiful & within easy walking distance. The Siuslaw river is an ever changing canvas of water, ebbing & flowing with the changing tides & teeming with wildlife. There's always something happening on the water, you just have to look for it. The above photo shows a very low tide. We haven't had much rain recently so the river didn't have much water to contribute. During low tides, three seagulls walk around picking at food on the sand. One seagull is a juvenile and mostly walks around crying for food from the other two birds. I call him "Squawky", you can't miss him.
